Greetings! We debated about whether we would put up a challenge on a snow day, but then we realized that this is exactly what Digital Learning is all about! You don’t have to be at school to participate in this activity AND you don’t have to respond the day the post goes up (as long as you get all of your responses done by the last day). So… here is today’s challenge:

Do you like to participate in scavenger hunts? If so, geocaching is for you! Geocaching is a way to connect with nature while using technology. Using GPS-enabled devices, participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. For a more extensive definition click here.
The first step is to set up a free account on the geocaching website. Once you set up an account, the next step is to chose a cache you would like to find by going here. This link will take you to the “hide and seek” section on the geocaching site. For your first try, start with a cache rated one star, which is the lowest difficulty (then as you get comfortable, gradually go up in difficulty). You can choose caches in a variety of ways including a zip code search, state search, and specific address search. Once you’ve chosen how you want to search, hit “Go” and you will be directed to a list of caches that fit your search choices.
Each cache is unique in its description, but all of them will provide GPS coordinates to help you find it. Using a geocaching app is the best option from there. Geocaching Intro (available in the App Store) for example, will even sync your chosen cache(s) to your mobile device. Using a standard GPS will work just fine too.
FINDING AND RECORDING YOUR CACHE
Now the adventure begins! Find the cache and see what’s inside. Often there is a log provided to keep a record of who’s found the cache before. Sometimes there is a trinket. It is common courtesy to leave objects found in the cache unless directed to take them. Once you’ve found the cache, you will also want to log your find on the geocaching site.
TAKE THE NEXT STEP
After you have some experience finding caches, create your own! Gather materials (including a water-tight container) and find the perfect hiding spot. You can use the geocaching site to “hide” your cache. You will want to read the rules and guidelines first. Once you understand them, you’re ready to complete this section. Hint: You will need to know the exact GPS coordinates in order to complete this section. Once you complete the form, your cache will be reviewed by people at the geocaching site. They will then make your cache visible for others to find or they will suggest changes to make before it becomes visible.
Caches are located all over the world, so as you travel around, refer to the geocaching site for caches available in your area.
